    Dynamical and topological aspects of consensus formation in complex networks

    The present work analyzes a particular scenario of consensus formation, where the individuals navigate across an underlying network defining the topology of the walks. The consensus, associated to a given opinion coded as a simple message, is generated by interactions during the agent's walk and manifest itself in the collapse of the various opinions into a single one. We analyze how the topology of the underlying networks and the rules of interaction between the agents promote or inhibit the emergence of this consensus. We find that non-linear interaction rules are required to form consensus and that consensus is more easily achieved in networks whose degree distribution is narrower.Fil: Chacoma, Andrés Alberto.     Allee effect in models of interacting species

    The search for more realistic models for interacting species has produced many adaptations of the original Lotka-Volterra equations, such as the inclusion of the Allee effect and the different Holling's types of functional response. In the present work we show that a correct implementation of both ideas together requires a careful formulation. We focus our work in the fact that a density dependent carrying capacity, combined with the Allee effect, can lead to meaningless effects. We illustrate the difficulties in predator-prey and two-species competition models, together with our proposed solution of the careful inclusion of the corresponding cubic terms.Fil: Kuperman, Marcelo Nestor.     The destructive effect of human stupidity: a revision of Cipolla’s fundamental laws

    In this work, we analyze an evolutionary game that incorporates the ideas presented by Carlo Cipolla in “The fundamental laws of human stupidity”. The game considers four strategies, three of them are inherent to the player behavior and can evolve via imitation dynamics, while the fourth one is associated with an eventual behavior that can be adopted by any player at any time with a certain probability. This fourth strategy corresponds to what Cipolla calls a stupid person. The probability of behaving stupidly acts as a parameter that induces a phase transition in the steady distribution of strategies among the population.Fil: Bárcenas, Donny R..     Crimes against humanity: the role of international courts

    We study the role of international tribunals, like the International Criminal Court (ICC), as an effective way of reducing the number and/or gravity of crimes against humanity. The action of the ICC is directed against leaders that promote or tolerate these kinds of crimes, that is, political authorities, army commanders, civil leaders, etc. In order to simulate the action of the ICC we build a hierarchical society where the most important leaders have the highest connectivity and can spread their points of view, or their orders, through a chain of less but still highly connected deputy chiefs or opinion chieftains. In this way, if they practice misconduct, corruption, or any kind of discriminatory or criminal actions against individuals or groups, it would very difficult and improbable that they will be prosecuted by the courts of their own country. It is to alleviate this situation that the ICC was created. Its mission is to process and condemn crimes against humanity though a supranational organism that can act on criminal leaders in any country. In this study, the action of the ICC is simulated by removing the corrupt leader and replacing it by a "decent" one. However, as the action of the corrupt leader could have spread among the population by the time the ICC acts, we try to determine if a unique action of the ICC is sufficient or if further actions are required, depending on the degree of deterioration of the human rights in the hypothetical country. The results evidence the positive effect of the ICC action with a relatively low number of interventions.     Mathematical model of livestock and wildlife: Predation and competition under environmental disturbances

    Inspired by real scenarios in Northern Patagonia, we analyze a mathematical model of a simple trophic web with two herbivores and one predator. The studied situations represent a common practice in the steppes of Argentine Patagonia, where livestock are raised in a semi-wild state, either on the open range or enclosed, coexisting with competitors and predators. In the present work, the competing herbivores represent sheep and guanacos, while the predator is associated with the puma. The proposed model combines the concepts of metapopulations and patches dynamics, and includes an explicit hierarchical competition between species, which affects their prospect to colonize an empty patch when having to compete with other species. We perform numerical simulations of spatially extended metapopulations assemblages of the system, which allow us to incorporate the effects of habitat heterogeneity and destruction. The numerical results are compared with those obtained from mean field calculations. We find that the model provides a good theoretical framework in several situations, including the control of the wild populations that the ranchers exert to different extent. Furthermore, the present formulation incorporates new terms in previously analyzed models that help to reveal the important effects due to the heterogeneous nature of the system.Fil: Laguna, Maria Fabiana.     The irrevesible path of the Anthropocene

    La crítica a la dicotomía Homo sapiens-naturaleza ha servido como base para definir el Antropoceno. Si los humanos nos reconocemos hoy como un importante motor del cambio global como para que seamos parte del nombre de una era, es el momento en el cual las Ciencias Humanas y Sociales aporten una propuesta innovadora plasmando los múltiples conocimientos que producidos en el marco de un debate transdisciplinario con otras ciencias. Superar la dicotomía humanos-naturaleza permitirá definir mejor esta nueva era. Planteamos que la irreversibilidad del proceso exige acciones combinadas entre diferentes enfoques que tensen la economía humana con los límites planetarios que han formulado las diferentes ciencias.The Homo sapiens-nature dichotomy critique has served for defining the Anthropocene era. If humans recognize ourselves today as an important power of global change, so that we are part of the name of an era, it is the moment in which the Humanities and Social Sciences contribute with an innovative proposal, reflecting their multiple knowledges produced within the framework of a transdisciplinary debate with other sciences. Overcoming the human-nature dichotomy will better to define this new era.     Pedestrian flows through a narrow doorway: Effect of individual behaviours on the global flow and microscopic dynamics

    We study the dynamics of pedestrian flows through a narrow doorway by means of controlled experiments. The influence of the pedestrians’ behaviours is investigated by prescribing a selfish attitude to a fraction cs of the participants, while the others behave politely. Thanks to an original setup enabling the re-injection of egressed participants into the room, the analysis is conducted in a (macroscopically) quasi-stationary regime. We find that, as cs is increased, the flow rate J rises, interpolating between published values for egresses in normal conditions and measurements for competitive evacuations. The dependence of several flow properties on the pedestrian density ρ at the door, independently of cs, suggests that macroscopically the behavioural aspects could be subsumed under the density, at least in our specific settings with limited crowd pressure. In particular, under these conditions, J grows monotonically with ρ up to “close-packing” (ρ≈9m−2). The flow is then characterised microscopically. Among other quantities, the time lapses between successive escapes, the pedestrians’ waiting times in front of the door, and their angles of incidence are analysed statistically. In a nutshell, our main results show that the flow is orderly for polite crowds, with narrowly distributed time lapses between egresses, while for larger cs the flow gets disorderly and vanishing time lapses emerge. For all cs, we find an alternation between short and long time lapses, which we ascribe to a generalised zipper effect. The average waiting time in the exit zone increases with its occupancy.     Behavioral effects in room evacuation models

    In this work we study a model for the evacuation of pedestrians from an enclosure considering a continuous space substrate and discrete time. We analyze the influence of behavioral features that affect the use of the empty space, that can be linked to the attitudes or characters of the pedestrians. We study how the interaction of different behavioral profiles affects the needed time to evacuate completely a room and the occurrence of clogging. We find that neither fully egotistic nor fully cooperative attitudes are optimal from the point of view of the crowd. In contrast, intermediate behaviors provide lower evacuation times. This leads us to identify some phenomena closely analogous to the faster-is-slower effect. The proposed model allows for distinguishing between the role of the attitudes in the search for empty space and the attitudes in the conflicts.Fil: Dossetti, V..
